Craft Room and Office Organization Tour

I am absolutely thrilled to be sharing this post with you all today. It has been a long time coming and I’m so excited for you to see the finished space. Come on in, stay a while. I have a comfy chair for you to sit in while I tell you all about my FINISHED office.

Welcome. When you first walk into the space you are hit with a beam of sunlight from the two windows in the corner. The first thing that you may noticed is my framed wedding dress. I chose to hang it so I could look at it everyday.

To the right of the door, upon entering, is my printer/sewing machine/serger /Silhouette Cameo storage cabinet. Long name because it holds a lot! 🙂 I made this using a piece of Ikea Cabinet and legs from a hardware store. Each machine is usually covered but for the sake of photos, I took the standard covers off so you could see them. I plan to make matching covers for all of the machines in the future. I still have a bit of fabric left over from the curtains so I will likely use that.

On the side of my machine storage cabinet is my pink Hobby Holster (c/o).  Haven’t heard of this genius product? Well, it’s a silicone mat and caddy for my hot glue gun. It keeps me from putting another burn mark into my printer top. 🙂 Yall it doesn’t melt!

Moving along now, we step onto the bright, warm rug (Toby’s favorite spot) and gaze towards our feet. Just beside my desk, on the floor, there are two waste bins I labled one for recycling and one for trash. Because creating and crafting often creates a lot of waste, I try to recycle as much as possible. Note: All labels that you see today were created using my Silhouette Cameo and cardstock. The label font is Sofia (free favorite!) and the gold label holders are from the old Martha Stewart Collection at Staples but you can find similar ones at The Container Store.

Please, have a seat in my cute yellow chair while I tell you about my desk and shelf organization. If that one is too hard for you (I find it quite comfy), I have a softer chair in my closet.

Each bin is labeled with its contents and then organized within. And the placement of each bin is based on how often those items are used. For example, I’m always gluing or taping something so that bin is the closest to my chair.

Stay Organized by keeping similar items together large bins.

Here are a list of my bin labels and what’s inside

Leather-I keep all of my scrap leather from a local shop here. They just throw it away so I’ve worked out a deal where I get it. Reduce waste yall!

Silhouette- I keep all of my vinyl scraps here, Silhouette pens, extra blades, etc.

Mailing- I keep all of my stamps, blank note cards, postcards from traveling and address stamper here.

Magazines- I keep special magazines that really inspire me here.

Manuals- instruction manuals to sewing machine, serger, Silhouette, printer, etc. I keep notes in them to help troubleshoot in the future.

Cardstock- 8×11 cardstock. I keep 12×12 cardstock and my Silhouette Cameo sticky mats out in the open. See photo below.

Glue and Tape- All adhesive materials. Including velcro. Within this bin I used old VHS covers from an oncology library I used to work at. I scooped them up when we were moving away from VHS and going to DVD. They were going to throw them away so why not. Those VHS covers old gluesticks perfectly and also velcro.

Use old VHS cases to store glue sticks and velcro

Wood- I keep all of my craft wood shapes, letters and popsicle sticks here.

Blank boxes-empty for future storage. They used to house stuff but I downsized big time for this challenge.

Knit scraps x3- I have three bins for knit scraps. I have a friend give me a bunch and I’m slowly working my way through them. They are organized in resealable bags by color.

Felt- holds crafting felt sheets

Cables- holds all cables/cords to run the equipment in my craft room. I also keep an extra cellphone charger and cube here (because I ALWAYS lose them).

Yarn- yarn and rope used for crocheting, crochet needles and two knitting needles (I don’t know how to knit but I was gifted these). Maybe I will learn one day.

Fabric x3- I have my fabric separated into a few categories: fleece, home decor and clothing fabrics.

White box with black frame on top- rubber stamps and ink pads.

Ribbon- cloth ribbons, decorative ribbons

Gifting-gift bows, tags, gift ribbon

Printer Paper- Costco surplus storage for printer paper 🙂

Sewing- sewing machine feet, screwdriver, embroidery mechanism, and

Paint- acrylics, spray paint and

Stickers- blank sticker sheets for future sticker making.

Lined Paper- notebook paper

Blank Journals- journals to be used

Photographs- photos from my past, old photo albums from high school.

Just behind my desk is my gallery wall.

Each piece was hand selected and has meaning. I even DIYED a few pieces but I will go into that a little later with a small tutorial about the best way to dig in your neighbors trash and take things they are throwing out… (frame x2, wood used for chevron arrows).Minted Gallery Wall with DIY marble painting and wood chevron arrows

Before we move along, I wanted to share a tip on crafting. I am always always using a ruler so I decided to make one from vinyl and put it on my desk so I could measure things quickly.

I used gold vinyl from Expressions Vinyl (they have the best prices in my opinion). Tutorial and Silhouette cut file here.

This desk is where all of my crafting takes place. Like I’ve said in older posts, I needed a place to separate my schooling from my crafting.

An organized sewing space. Craft Room Tour Lura Lumsden

Let’s move along and tour my closet now…where all of my studying and planner decor happens…the magic. I also keep my other diploma there to keep me motivated and a photo of my uncle who passed away from prostate cancer. On the left I keep my planner stuff and on the right I keep all of my nursing textbooks. Oh and my white chair is super comfy and so pretty!  I love it so much!

Above my cloffice space is more storage (see above for bin list). On the right side of the cloffice is where I keep my nursing school stuff. On the left, planner supplies and basic office supplies.

Because my husband and I are HUGE allergy sufferers,  most of the time we choose faux flowers (hence my wedding bouquets being made from brooches). I love these.

Planner Space Cloffice with Planner sticker storage and organized washi tape Craft Room Tour

I DIY a lot of planner stickers so I store them in a miniature binder to keep them all in one place.

To keep my favorite washi tape out of Kate’s mouth, I store them all in a sunglasses storage drawers. The little t-rex on top was a gift from a favorite professor at JMU on our last day of class. She told us we could be anything we wanted to be and that even with short arms the t-rex was still mighty! Or at least that is what I remember. I’m sure my friend Alison will remember and fill me in. 🙂

Update: Alison said, “Actually I’m pretty sure she said the dinosaurs are extinct because they didn’t adapt. So we should adapt to our environment.”

Just to the right of my cloffice (closet office) is where I store scissors, beautiful Aurifil threads, wire tools, and mason jars that store bits and bobs from previous projects.

Behide the craft room door is where I store my cutting mat, quilting squares and rulers. To hang them on the wall I use Command Hooks

And lastly, to add a little more green to the space, I made a planter for my new snake plant using wood from my neighbors trash (tutorial soon).

You can also see the curtains I DIYED for the space. I recently added to tassel trim to the edges. Obsessed with them!

Even after having professional photos taken, I feel like I still have so many details to share. Stay tuned for future posts and tutorials.

If you are new around here, thanks for stopping by and make sure you check out my Project Gallery and comment below to introduce yourself. I love hearing from readers and know that I read each and every comment.

Thank you for stopping by and of course if you see anything others may be inspired by, feel free to pin away.

Hey Kristen! I just went back to Ikea recently and had a chance to look. It’s the BESTA cabinet. Apologies for not responding until now. I just wanted to get you your answer first.
